What is an Apicoectomy?

An apicoectomy, also known as root-end surgery, is a minor surgical procedure that removes the very tip of a tooth's root. It's typically performed when a conventional root canal treatment hasn't been successful in eliminating infection. During the procedure, the endodontist makes a small incision in the gum tissue to expose the bone and inflamed tissue. The damaged tissue is removed along with the end of the root tip. A small filling is then placed to seal the end of the root canal, and the gum is sutured back into place to heal.

The Benefits of Getting an Apicoectomy

Last Resort to Save Your Tooth

An apicoectomy can often save a tooth that might otherwise need extraction, preserving your natural smile and avoiding the need for artificial replacements.

Targeted Treatment

This procedure allows us to directly address issues at the root tip that may not be treatable with conventional root canal therapy.

Long-Term Resolution

By removing the infected root tip and sealing the end of the root canal, an apicoectomy can provide a long-term solution to persistent infections and pain.

What dental issues can an apicoectomy put a stop to?

An apicoectomy can address several issues that may persist even after conventional root canal therapy. These include:

  • Persistent infections at the root tip that don't respond to standard treatments
  • Anatomical complexities in the root structure that prevent complete cleaning through traditional methods
  • Small fractures or canals at the root tip that aren't visible on X-rays
  • Blocked root canals that can't be cleaned and filled conventionally By directly accessing and treating the root tip, an apicoectomy can put a stop to ongoing infections, relieve chronic pain, and save teeth that might otherwise require extraction.
